MPO Fiber Optic Patch Cord Management Method

Many people do not understand the management method of MPO fiber optic jumpers. We need to learn how to manage related products such as MTP/MPO correctly, which will bring many benefits to our work. For example, you can easily find the installed fiber optic jumpers, and the maintenance work of the fiber optic jumpers will become much faster, and this can also provide proper bending radius protection.

In the process of network reconfiguration, accessibility plays a crucial role, directly affecting the reliability of the network and the cost of network reconfiguration.

Based on the above factors that affect the performance and maintenance of MPO jumper, we can draw the following six methods to improve the flexibility and reliability of fiber optic jumper management:

  • Pay attention to the bending radius of the fiber MPO patch cord. Generally speaking, the fiber optic jumpers with diameters of 1.6mm and 3.0mm can withstand bending radii not less than 3.5cm, while the MPO fiber optic jumpers can withstand bending radii not less than 11 times their diameter.

  • Do not pull or squeeze the fiber MPO patch cord. Excessive force during installation of the fiber optic jumper may apply pressure to the fiber optic jumper and its connectors, affecting its performance. It is worth noting that if you need to use extra force to pull a fiber optic jumper, there may be some problems.

  • Route the jumper according to the path of the fiber MPO patch cord. If the length of the existing jumpers is suitable for the current application, the jumper can be reused. However, you still need to remove the jumper from the fiber distribution frame and reinstall it along the new path. This is the only way to ensure that the MPO jumper does not knot, bend, or stretch.

To route the jumper effectively, you should find a suitable path for the jumper between two ports while avoiding the jumper from intertwining and being congested.

  • Using bundling or tying to manage the fiber MPO patch cord can make the panel look neat. However, if the fiber optic jumper is tied too tightly, it will increase the risk of excessive compression. To avoid this problem, you can appropriately loosen the fiber optic jumper to allow it to move freely.

  • Labeling the MPO jumper is a necessary task and one of the most important tasks for network system administrators. Proper labeling is necessary at any management point of the network cabling infrastructure (including patch panels), so that network technicians can accurately find the starting and ending points of the fiber optic cable.

  • Check if the fiber MPO jumper has physical damage, including pressure marks caused by sudden bending of the sheath and connector damage.

Strengthening the management of fiber optic jumpers can not only increase the reliability and flexibility of the fiber optic network system but also reduce the operating and maintenance costs of the fiber optic network.
